Biography
Brian Whetsell (he/him) is a PhD student in Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago. His research interests include medical and psychological anthropology, anthropology of psychiatry, selfhood and subjectivity, phenomenology, idioms of distress, and embodiment and somatization. His current work examines first-generation college student mental health and changing conceptions of the self through taking on the first-generation category as an identity. He has previously worked on ethnographic research of Mexican American adolescent distress and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
