Project Collaborator
Matthew Wilkens
Biography
Matthew Wilkens develops and uses computational methods to study the large-scale dynamics of literary and cultural history. At Cornell, he directs (with David Mimno) the Culture and Computation Lab and the AI for Humanists project. His work has contributed in particular to the spatial analysis of novels, the evolution of literary genres, and the use of artificial intelligence for historical research. His lab also applies computational narrative understanding methods to related problems in law, public health, and online communities. His current research seeks to develop and validate AI-based simulations of cultural processes to enable robust causal analysis in cases where it would be otherwise impossible. Wilkens is the author of two books, Revolution: The Event in Postwar Fiction and (with Elizabeth Evans) Gender and Literary Geography.
