Biography
Ted Underwood is a Professor of Information Sciences and English at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Much of his past research applies machine learning to illuminate literary history. At the moment, he’s interested in the converse problem: how can we use knowledge of cultural history to produce models that can explore multiple perspectives and reason about human diversity. He is currently working on ChronoLogic, a benchmark that evaluates a model’s ability to demonstrate understanding of historical contexts from 1800 to 2000 by drawing inferences and solving problems like a writer with a specified social background at a particular place and point in time.
